How To Pay for CDL Training at DriveCo

Tuition Assistance Options for Future Drivers

CDL training is a significant financial commitment. DriveCo CDL Learning Center helps students in Indiana find funding options that fit their situation. From government grants to carrier-paid programs, there are several ways to cover tuition costs, and many students pay little to nothing out of pocket.

Government Assistance Programs

WIOA (Workforce Innovation and Opportunities Act)

The Indiana WIOA program provides job training grants to people who face barriers to employment. Those who have been laid off, are receiving unemployment benefits, or qualify for SNAP may be eligible for a grant that covers CDL tuition.

Veterans and individuals with disabilities may also qualify under WIOA guidelines.

Government Programs →

NFJP (National Farmworker Jobs Program)

The National Farmworker Jobs Program is a federal program that provides tuition assistance and job placement support to agricultural workers. Individuals who worked in farm labor within the past two years may be eligible to apply

Veterans Benefits

Active-duty service members, veterans, reservists, and eligible dependents or spouses may qualify for education benefits through the GI Bill. DriveCo is approved for participation in multiple VA-administered funding programs.

The right program depends on a person’s service history and duty status. An admissions representative can help prospective students determine which benefit applies to their situation.

Carrier-Sponsored Training

Some national trucking companies will pay for CDL training upfront in exchange for a commitment to work for them after graduation. This is commonly called a sponsorship or company-sponsored training program.

DriveCo has established relationships with carriers, including Schneider and McElroy Truck Lines. In most cases, the commitment period is one year of employment with the sponsoring carrier.

This option is a good fit for students who know they want to enter trucking and are open to working with a specific carrier after earning their CDL.

Tuition Reimbursement

Some trucking companies offer reimbursement programs for drivers who paid for their own training. Students enroll and pay tuition independently, then receive reimbursement from their employer on a scheduled basis after being hired.

DriveCo has working relationships with several carriers that offer reimbursement programs, including:

  • Werner Enterprises
  • Knight Transportation
  • Swift
  • S. Xpress
  • Schneider National
  • McElroy Truck Lines
  • TMC Transportation
  • PTL

Unlike sponsorship programs, reimbursement arrangements typically do not require signing a contract that binds the student to a specific employer before training begins.

Cash Payment Plans

Students who do not qualify for grants or prefer not to use a carrier-based program can pay for training through one of DriveCo’s cash payment plans. These plans are structured to keep costs manageable and involve little to no interest.

Cash plans include the DOT physical, drug screen, 2 state skills testing fees, use of training trucks, and all course materials.

Not sure which option fits your situation? An admissions representative can review each student’s background and goals to identify the best available funding path. No commitment required to have a conversation.

Frequently Asked Questions About CDL Tuition Assistance

Does DriveCo offer any programs where students pay nothing out of pocket?

Yes. Students who qualify for WIOA grants or carrier-sponsored training may have their full tuition covered. Eligibility depends on individual circumstances.

How does a student find out if they qualify for WIOA funding?

A student should contact a DriveCo admissions representative, who can point them toward the local workforce development office and walk them through the eligibility requirements.

Can veterans use GI Bill benefits to pay for CDL training at DriveCo?

Yes. DriveCo is approved for multiple VA education benefit programs, though the specific benefit available depends on a person’s service history and duty status.

What is the difference between carrier sponsorship and tuition reimbursement?

With sponsorship, a carrier pays tuition before or during training in exchange for a work commitment afterward. With reimbursement, the student pays first and receives repayment from the employer after getting hired.

Does a student have to commit to a specific trucking company to get tuition help?

Not necessarily. WIOA grants, veterans benefits, and cash payment plans do not require a work commitment to a specific employer. Carrier-sponsored programs do require a post-graduation employment agreement.

How long does it take to get approved for WIOA or TAA funding?

Processing times vary by program and local workforce office, so students should apply as early as possible. A DriveCo admissions representative can help start that process.

What does DriveCo’s cash payment plan cover?

The plan includes tuition, the DOT physical, drug screening, 2-state skills testing fees, use of training trucks, and all course materials.

Can a student use multiple funding sources at the same time?

It depends on the programs. Some sources can be combined, while others cannot. An admissions representative can clarify what combinations are allowed based on a student’s eligibility.

Is financial assistance available at all DriveCo Indiana locations?

Yes. Tuition assistance options are available at all DriveCo locations, including Gary, LaPorte, Evansville, Jasper, and Hamilton County (Noblesville).
